Care of Mens Formal Shoes
Men’s formal shoes or what might be referred to as “tuxedo shoes” have a patent leather finish. Patent leather is a very shiny finish. The process was invented by Seth Boyden in the 1800’s. Boyden was perhaps the greatest American inventor, but ironically Boyden never patented his process for making patent leather.
Patent leather has a hard finish that is made by applying a lacquer coat to the leather. Because of this it makes the shoe stiff and not very breathable. But you have to agree that the look of men’s formal shoes is unmistakably classy.
Mens Tuxedo Shoe Care
There are only two steps.
- Clean the shoes with a mild soap and a wet towel to remove grime and dirt. Use water that is free of chlorine and minerals if possible. You should clean your shoes after each use.
- Second use a liquid silicone to shine and protect. One product you might consider is Vernice. You can apply with a soft cloth. Do not use oils or Vaseline to polish your shoes. With the shiny surface they will just attract dust and make them look worse.
Product Description for Vernice
VERNICE is a silicon polish for all patent leather. Silicon is not recommended for most leather but patent leather is one exception. This high quality silicon polish will help protect against scuff marks (dance shoes) and will give a shine in seconds with no need for buffing. Can be used on belts, handbags, shoes etc…

These are like the military dress shoes I had in the Army. Great shoes and they look fantastic! Another great way to shine them is with an old pair of pantyhose.
It is no use paying a huge sum for shoes when it wouldn’t be taken care of. Maintenance is as important as the purchase itself and could even cost you more.
